A superb tribute to the New Zealand landscape photography of Whites Aviation. Many of New Zealand’s best hand-coloured photos were produced by Whites Aviation between the 1950s and 1970s and changed the way we saw our country. These glorious scenic vistas were a sensation, adorning offices and lounges throughout the land. Now, despite massive changes in society and photography, these images remain sought-after collectors’ items, a charming reminder of gentler, quieter times.
The photos in this book were first presented in Peter Alsop’s book Hand-Coloured New Zealand: The Photographs of Whites Aviation, which was published in large format in 2016 by Potton & Burton, and which was an immediate hit, quickly selling out.
Wonderland collects the best of these images in a more condensed edition, presented in the style of a New Zealand pictorial and geographically organised from Northland and Auckland, down to the deep south. The introduction tells the story of Whites Aviation, with profiles of the key personalities behind this company’s success.
