Bob's Hut Mini Hut - Nelson Lakes National Park, Tasman

$215.00

Built in 1958, Bob’s Hut was one of the first SF70 huts in the South Island. Over the next decade the NZFS would dot these huts around the country for deer cullers to bunk down in while on the job.

In the late 80’s the standard 6 bunk design was extended to 8 bunks, despite the remote setting and relatively low visitors numbers. In 2020 The Backcountry Trust replaced the roof and gave this historic hut a new chapter.

Top Matakitaki Hut (Bob for short) sits in the sun nestled against beech forest at the edge of an extensive river flat in the West Matakitaki Valley, while above rise the summits of the Spenser Mountains and Mt Maling.

You’ll find a shrine to ‘Bob’ by the hut. Who ‘Bob’ actually was remains a mystery to this day.

Our Mini Hut captures the hut in its original form with its current paint job, cream and red.
