Sunrise on a sandy beach on the edge of the Pacific Ocean with an island beyond - it's an achetypal scene, especially as the island is a volcano. Rangitoto Island is off Auckland's east coast. The image is in thirds: the dark sand still holding the night's blue light; the middle third of the sea admitting the yellow of the sun, and the top third a reversing yellow-blue sky.
