Beech Tree

A tall trunk slightly left of centre and an 'S' bend of tawa leaves just off to the right form the main structure in the composition of this picture, though the exquisite mossy bottom in the lower third of the photo adds a delightful extra. Light filtering through a canopy of tawa trees throws a very distinct green hue in the North Island native forest and their leaves seem to dance around in the picture frame. Whirinaki has some of New Zealand's finest mixed beech/podocarp forest, and I was involved in one of the last major anti-logging campaigns in our conservation history to save this remarkable place.
