Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

It's one o'clock on a summers morning at the 'Glacier Lagoon in Iceland where ice blocks carve off the glacier, cross the lake and get rushed by the river into the ocean only to drift ashore again. I'm getting cold, wet feet placing the tripod aligning the triangle of the ice with that of the clouds. A pink light suffuses everything so I slightly over-expose the image to acknowledge the soft hue.

Literally at our antipodes, Iceland is a raw, sparsely populated landscape and yet with a very literate culture which in many ways is similar to New Zealand. My dearest friend Dr Andrew Dennis after studying at Canterbury University went on to Harvard and Cambridge and became an expert on old Iceland law and lore’s. He lived in Iceland several years teaching Shakespeare at Reykjavik University and I was privileged to have two wonderful trips to Iceland with him. We both loved its sublime wilderness landscapes but also Andy with his wide reading and convivial style with people was able to overlay every place we visited with stories from the sagas as well as the present predicaments of the families residing in these huge valleys.
