Top Butler Hut Mini Hut - Butler River, West Coast Stewardship Land

$215.00

A standard 6-bunk built towards the end of the NZFS hut building era in 1974 by Joe Hansen & co. It remained unpainted for 4 years, no doubt due to West Coast conditions in this remote area.

They eventually got in there with some paint; red for the roof, green walls. The chimney remained unpainted, so we’ve replicated that in our Mini Hut version.

The hut still stands, overlooked by Kings Peak, now a shade of yellow. Trampers will be glad the open fire was replaced with a wood burner. The fate of the hut could be up to Tāwhirimātea as DOC warns of ongoing flood risk.

Our Mini Hut captures the hut in steel and reclaimed wood, inspired by its first paint colours with unpainted chimney.

6.5cm (w) x 8cm (l) x 7.5cm (h)

Ingredients: 1/2 large tin can, slab of reclaimed timber, hours of time and attention, years of experimentation, a healthy dose of hut obsession

Every hut comes with a corrugated info card & map hidden in its chimney
