Petra


I had seen photos of the abandoned trading city of Petra that my friend the photographer Emmett Gowen had taken and on a trip to Israel I was able to cross into Jordan and spend a day photographing these extra-ordinary architectural remains. The city, hidden in a series of gorges, was inhabited by a sophisticated Arabic trading culture called the Nabateans whose camel trains reached east and west in Roman times.
