Late evening sun and mist contribute to both simultaneously delineate and soften the hard, jagged edges of the Remarkables' summit ridge. The yellow on the horizon in the shadows and on the summit face creates an unusual, beautiful palette, one that has a distinctly Otago feel. I took this shot while working on 'Lord of the Rings' when we were taking plates to digitally create the great volcano at the heart of Mordor. In the film they altered the colours dramatically to make it appear severe and threatening, a clear demonstration of the psychological effects of colour on our emotions.
