There is a strong positive/negative effect in this image with the contrast between the light blue snow and the almost black trunk and branches of this old beech tree near Mount Cook Village. Because it was nearly dead and had lost a lot of its outside leaves, you see into this big tree's heart to where its branches radiate from. This 'reaching out' from the centre creates the circular composition with pathos in every branch carrying its heavy white shadow of snow.
